PhD Opening - User-Centered Security - 2026

Come study at the University of Calgary!
I am looking for a capable PhD student interested in working on problems in the area of User-Centered Security and Privacy. Topics of particular interest are security and privacy challenges experienced by vulnerable populations. Applications without discussion of experience, interest, and/or fit with these topics will be removed from consideration. An MS in CS or ECE is also expected, as is basic knowledge of cybersecurity. Please note: while this opportunity is primarily focused on PhD students, exceptional applicants to the MS program may also be considered.
More information about myself and my research is available on my website. My research group is located at the University of Calgary. I have expertise in software and embedded security, usable security, applications of AI/ML to security, and security measurements. The University is also home to a strong group of security researchers and working on a variety of cybersecurity topics.
The selected candidate joining the program will work in a Calgary-based multi-disciplinary team of experienced researchers; my very capable collaborators on this project include Prof. Khosro Salmani and Prof. Terrance Mok, both based at Calgary’s Mount Royal University.
Calgary is ranked among the most livable cities in North America. It features an abundance of parks, hiking and biking trails, skating and amenities. It is also a short drive away from the Canadian Rockies and Banff national park. You get the opportunity to do world-class research and have fun in a beautiful place!
If interested, submit your application here. We’ll be accepting applications until December 31st 2026; although we may select a candidate sooner than this deadline. Note that, due to the high volume of applications, not every application may receive a response. The position is intended to start as soon the selected student is available.
